How to Thank the People Who Make Your Coffee on International Coffee Day
- The lines on this page are sorted by who is saying them and who reads them: a customer thanking the barista who pulls their shot, an owner thanking the people behind the bar, and a customer posting a cup and tagging both the shop and the roaster.
- A note folded around your tip reaches the barista during the shift. A post about your own cup reaches your followers, and the barista may never see it, so write the note first and post second if you want both.
- Name the skill you are thanking someone for. A barista who pours a rosetta, holds the same blend steady all day, or clears a twelve-deep queue knows which of those they did well, and a message that says it lands harder than a general compliment.
- 1 October is the heaviest shift of the year in most shops, so hand the note over and step aside. The barista can read it on their break, and that is when it will mean something.
- CafΓ© owners get their own section here, because a whiteboard line that names the 5am opener reads differently to staff than a post thanking an amazing team.
The Vibe: On 1 October a busy bar runs ten or fifteen drinks deep, and a barista holding a milk jug cannot stop to read a paragraph while three tickets print behind them. Customers who try to deliver a thank-you mid-rush usually end up apologising instead.
The Play: Write the note before you join the queue, on the back of a receipt, a sleeve or a card from your bag. Fold it around your cash and drop it in the jar, or tuck it under the jar lid where it will not blow off the counter. When you reach the front, say the barista’s name, say you left something in the jar for them, and move down the bar. They will read it when the rush breaks.

What CafΓ© Owners Can Write to Their Bar Staff on 1 October
Staff read a shop’s 1 October post the way they read a schedule: looking for themselves. “Thanks to our amazing team” gives them nothing to find. Naming roles and shifts does. The opener unlocks at five, dials in the grinder in the dark and has the first pot down before anyone else arrives, and nobody sees that work except whoever counts the till. The person on bar through the eight-to-ten rush is making a decision every twenty seconds while the queue reaches the door. Somebody else is restocking the pastry case, changing the bins and running the dishwasher so the bar never stops. These are separate jobs done by separate people, and a manager who lists them shows the team that someone was paying attention to what actually happened during the shift. Baristas notice when an owner can describe their job. They also notice when the owner cannot, which is what a generic thank-you tells them.
15 Owner-to-Staff Messages for the Breakroom Whiteboard, the Shift Schedule and Your Shop’s Post
- To whoever unlocked at five and had the grinder dialled in before the lights warmed up β the whole day runs on that hour. Thank you. π
- Happy International Coffee Day to the crew who make the same cup right, every single time, for people who would notice immediately if we didn’t. β
- Our openers do the hardest hour of the day with nobody watching. Today the rest of us are watching. Thank you.
- You cleared a queue to the door this morning without a single remake. That is the skill, and I saw it. β‘
- To the people who pour rosettas at eight in the morning while four tickets are printing β thank you for not cutting that corner. π¨
- Today’s rush is on us because of you. Coffee’s on me at close. (ββΏβ)
- Thanks to the closer who left the bar spotless last night, the opener started today ahead instead of behind. That handover is teamwork.
- Every regular who says “they know my order here” is talking about one of you. Thank you for remembering. π
- To whoever keeps the pastry case full and the bins empty while the bar never stops β the shop does not run without that job. Thank you. π₯
- You taught two new starters this month while working your own bar. That is training nobody put on the schedule. Thank you. π
- Happy International Coffee Day to a team that tastes the espresso before it goes out. ββ¨
- The queue moved all morning and the coffee was excellent all morning. Both of those were you. γ½(β’βΏβ’)γ
- To the barista who turned a bad morning around for a customer today with nothing but a kind word and a good flat white β thank you.
- Anyone working today’s rush is on shift drinks and an even tip split. Thank you for showing up for the busiest day of our year. π«Ά
- Best crew behind any bar in this city. Today and every other day. Thank you. π
Run one barista per open hour on your shop’s stories through International Coffee Day. Each slot is a single photo taken behind the bar plus three lines: their first name, how long they have been behind the bar, and the drink they actually order on a break. Shoot all of them the day before so nobody is posing mid-rush on 1 October, and schedule them on the hour so followers who check back at eleven see a different person than they did at nine. Close the day by reposting the customer replies to the story, then save the whole run to a highlight so new followers can scroll the team weeks later.
The Vibe: A barista’s face on a public cafΓ© account reaches customers, ex-partners and anyone who walks past the shop. Some of your team will be glad to be posted. Others have reasons you do not know about for keeping their face and surname off a public feed, and being asked in front of everyone at handover is not a fair way to find out.
The Play: Ask each barista privately, before the day, whether you can post their photo, their first name and their full name, and treat those as three separate answers. Offer a back-of-the-head shot or a first-name-only caption to anyone who wants it. Then pair the post with something they can hold: shift drinks for everyone working 1 October, an even tip split across the rota including the closer, or an early close with the hour paid.

Today is the busiest coffee day of the year and every cup leaving this bar was made by one of five people. Here they are. Thank you. π β then name all five.
Nothing like a cup of coffee to show your appreciation! Single origin or double shot, no matter what I’m always grateful for the little things. #littlethingsmatter #coffeeappreciation β¨ β add the shop handle first, the roaster handle second.
